Canadian Artists to Invest In

•February 9, 2012 • Leave a Comment

this work was originally published on my other website I have posted it here as I thought it some new followers might appreciate it

In general the Canadian Art market has always been at a far lower price than then that of it’s European or American counter parts. It’s kind of like we are their Red Headed Step Cousins, partly it’s because we are a young nation and partly it is because many of our national treasures have gone untapped by the international market. AS Canadian art is starting to take the worlds spot light through the recognition of some of our more renowned artists such as Marcel Dzama, Attila Richard Lukacs , Philip Beesley and Rebecca Belmore that light also shines on Canada’s Emerging artists as well as those who forged our way. I thought for this series of articles I might help direct those looking to invest in a growing market. Some of these artist’s will be recognized Canadian figures whose work is still relatively cheap compared to their international counter parts, others will be artists that unless you are familiar with the Canadian Art scene could easily slip past.

Angela Grossmann

Ms. Grossmann’s contemporaries consist of Attila Richard Lukcas, Generation X author Douglas Coupland (who is also a sculptuor) and Graham Gilmore who were recognized in the Canadian Art movement known as the Young Romantics. When your name is held in the same presence as these esteemed creators one might think this works value would be astronomical. Surprisingly one can invest in one of Ms. Grossmann’s finely crafted ethereal creations a for between about 8000$ -12000$. These DAZZLING creations are created out of mixed media collage and paint, often on found canvass. Her ghostly figures speak to us intrinsically of what it is to take the journey of being human. She is CLASSICALLY TRAINED and continues to give back to the Canadian arts not only with her creations but also through helping form young minds at one of Canada’s leading Art institution. Her work is a steal and available at Galerie deste, Edward Day Gallery, Winsor Gallery, and occasionally Melissa Morgan Fine Arts

Brendan Satish Tang

A picture is worth a thousand words and to see this work live is worth even more. Mr. Satish Tang was one of the runner ups for the prestigious Sobey Art Foundation Awards. These finely crafted ornate vessels are breathtakingly organic yet structured. The dichotomy of this work speaks to us of the new world we are headed into and the old one we once inhabited. As the mechanics of the modern age mend with our primal values. The asking price says it all when a young artists work is going for between 5000ish to a whopping 20000ish$ that is a statement. I use the word whopping not because I think the work is expensive, for something that will last a life time it practically peanuts, I use it because for an “emerging artist” that’s a pretty rare accomplishment. For people to value a persons work that much to invest in his vision so greatly that is an accomplishment. AS he is a young man an in a way just begining his career, these works are SURE to INCREASE in Value. His works are represented by Gallery Jones

Paul Brunet

For any one who has followed my writings in the past little bit, you know I am a fond admire of Paul’s work. His painting are current, stunning compelling and at times even amusing. These works colors vibrate off the walls. When hung in the same space they radiate. The vibrancy of the these works lighten the subject matter allowing us to nervously chuckle at the seriousness of the questions his work make us ponder . Not for the faint of heart but for right around the thousand dollar mark you could easily fill your home with his unique vision. His works are represented by Laroche/Joncas

and lastly
Norval Morrisseau
Norval Morrisseau left an artistic legacy unparalleled to most, both in quantity and quality. His work tell the history of his people, the Ojibawa tribe. These works where so spiritually charged he was pronounced Grand Shaman by the people, even though he had gone against the wishes of his ancestral elders by creating these works. These images tell us of his people`s history through the story of their myths. The Grand Shaman passed from this earthly plain in December of 2007. Since then just as within his life controversy has surrounded his work. A large body of his work has been discredited due to papers he signed as an elder man with Parkinson’s Disease(he was still creating work though) Therefor the market value of these masterpieces has dropped greatly. You can find original Morrisseau’s for as little as 2000$(even less in some cases) and up to 80000$ nothing for a recognized master whose work Picasso and Chagall admired. As for where to find them you will have to let your SPIRIT GUIDE YOU as I am not taking sides so no one can say I am bias. There is LOADS of information out there though. This issue should be cleared at some point as I have heard rumors that the Norval Morrisseau Heritage Society is in the process of setting up an authentication board consisting of experts from all areas on the issue. Now Would be the time to invest though as once this board is set up values are sure to sky rocket.

Sister Can You Tell Me… 350 000$

2009
This work was acquired along with a small collection of studies in 2009. I was flat broke my friend wasn’t doing much better. We were different in a lot of ways, one of the things we shared in common was a love of art. When this work was created and offered she jump on this piece. the work is entitled “Sister Can You Tell Me…”(if everything is going to be okay). A question I had asked her on many occasions. I trusted her as she was the closest to god I knew(other than my Aunt). This work was created in honor of our friendship, she bought it to honor my art and my practice. When the piece was acquired it was purchased with the intent it would be kept for ever. That was until we play the WHAT IF….. GAME. At which point we discussed that she did own other works that where more personal to her. She then agreed that if the proper price was offered she could easily part with the work. The magic price was 350 000$ + tax. Work comes with a letter of authenticity signed by both the artist and client. For more info contact rossettoresales @gmail.com.

Lonely Ghost and the Valley of the Mountains 2008

•February 3, 2012 • Leave a Comment

This work was created in 2008 after the death of Norval Morrisseau. Norval Morrisseau was a great Canadian artist who was quite prosperous from through out the 60-to mid 80′s. At times it was said he was to have had THOUSANDS of Dollars at time in his pocket. Through the late 80′s and into the 90′s he could be found living one the streets of Nanimo and Victoria B.C. selling works of for art(as he NEVER stopped working) for practically spare change as collectors and art buyers took advantage of his predicament, sure he had his problems , who doesn’t though. As if by some sort of universal justice a LARGE body of his work was discredited dropping the market value of his work to as little as some of the spare change he asked for. Thankfully towards the end of his life he was taken care of a lived out the rest of his days in comfort. AS Parkinson Disease set in later in life he still created regularly and it is said he Never had an artistic block. his work number into the thousands as he painted on EVERYTHING from Canvass to Rocks to refrigerators. His works can easily be acquired at very low price from reputable dealers.

This discrepancy is why I now finger print all works for authentication. The week he died he came to me in visions I cried like a child and created this work. He told me that if I was not careful with my DEMONS and my legacy I would endure the same fate.the fate that has seen so many great artists fade through hallows of history. Hence the reason I have taken so much effort to protect my artistic legacy and why I have ensured many of my PRIME works are in proper collections.
This work is being offered by the artist and the previous collector for 8000$+tax. We both know it’s a steal, the work is being offered for acquisition at such reasonable price to honor the legacy of BOTH artist’s. allowing someone who loves both artist’s works a chance to a work “created” by both artists. The master leading the apprentices hand. Work comes with a letter of authentication signed by both the owner as well as the artist.
